Aqui há História. Aqui há Cultura. Aqui há Portugal.

Here, there is History. Here, there is Culture. Here, it is Portugal.

Aqui… nasceu o nome da II Dinastia de Portugal: a Dinastia de Avis. Iniciada em 1385 com D. João I, O Mestre de Avis, foi, pelos melhores motivos, uma das mais emblemáticas da nossa História. Falamos do período das Cruzadas, dos Descobrimentos e do Renascimento. Falamos da Era do Ouro.

 

Aqui… instalou-se (1211), a mais antiga Ordem Militar de Portugal: a Ordem de Avis, cujos freires Cavaleiros se evidenciaram em importantes momentos da História de Portugal. E ainda hoje assim é: para os bravos, a Cruz de Avis! Preservada com respeito, a Ordem de Avis tem por Grão-Mestre, o Presidente da República Portuguesa. 

 

Daqueles tempos, sobrevivem as Ruínas do Convento de S. Bento, o Edifício dos Paços do Concelho (outrora residência dos Mestres da Ordem de Avis), a Igreja Matriz e Pelourinho e 3 das 6 Torres do original Castelo de Avis: Torre da Rainha, Torre de Sto. António e Torre de São Roque.

 

 

Mas, quando o “Aqui” ainda não era Avis,

já muita História tinha corrido

 

Aqui… onde os nossos antepassados cruzaram o território há, pelo menos, 100 000 anos, há testemunhos pré-históricos que merecem uma visita especial: Anta do Olival da Anta, Anta da Cumeada, Anta do Penedo da Moura e o Núcleo Megalítico da Ordem, onde se inclui a Anta Grande da Ordem classificada como Monumento Nacional.

 

Aqui… onde são visíveis as influências e as marcas do Império Romano, cuja memória se conserva em alguns dos vestígios reunidos no Centro de Arqueologia de Avis e na Fundação Arquivo Paes Teles – Ervedal, ou permanece perto do seu local de origem, como é o caso da Lápide de Entre-Águas, em Benavila, classificada como Monumento Nacional.

 

Aqui… onde também acreditamos existirem vestígios islâmicos. Desafiamo-lo a vir descobri-los.

Here ... the name of the Second Dynasty of Portugal was born: Avis Dynasty. Founded by D. João I - "The Master of Avis" in 1385, it was for the best reasons one of the most emblematic dynasties of our history. We are talking of the period of the Crusades, Discoveries and the Renaissance. We're talking of the Golden Age.

 

Here ... was installed (1211) the oldest Military Order of Portugal: the Order of Avis, whose monk-knights had played a relevant role in important moments of the History of Portugal. So it remains today: for the braves, the Cross of Avis Order! Preserved with respect, the Avis Order's Grand Master, is nowadays, the President of Portuguese Republic.

From those times, remains the ruins of S. Bento's Convent, the Palace of the Municipality (residence of the Avis Order Masters), the Mother Church, the "Pelourinho" and 3 of the 6 castle Towers: Queen Tower, Sto. António Tower S. Roque Tower.

 

But, when "Here" was not yet Avis,

a lot of History had already run

 

Here ... where our ancestors crossed the territory for at least 100.000 years ago, are prehistoric testimonies that deserve a special visit: Olival Dolmen, Cumeada Dolmen, Penedo da Moura Dolmen and the Order Megalithic Nucleus which includes the Great Dolmen that is classified as a national monument.

 

Here ... where influences from Roman Empire are visible and preserved: some are visible on the Center of Archeology of Avis, others on the Foundation Paes Teles - Ervedal Archive and a few are still remaining near their original places, as it is the case of the Tombstone of Entre-Águas, in Benavila, also classified as a national monument.

 

Here ... where we also believe there are some Islamic traces. We challenge you to come and discover them.
